Why is it concerning?

Heart diseases are the leading cause of death worldwide, responsible for over 17 million deaths annually, 85% of which are due to heart attack and stroke. Most cases are asymptomatic or have silent, infrequent, or brief symptoms, leading to undiagnosed or misdiagnosed conditions. This can result in serious health issues, such as ventricular fibrillation, which accounts for 70% of the 5 million cardiac arrest deaths each year, or the 30% of the 46 million people with atrial fibrillation (Afib) who do not experience any symptoms but are at increased risk of stroke, heart failure, blood clots, and cognitive decline. Additionally, 49% of adults have at least one high-risk condition for cardiovascular disease (CVD).

Early diagnosis can enable early care and prevent serious health issues, hospitalization, and deaths. For example, anticoagulation can prevent 2/3 of strokes in Afib. Furthermore, early detection can potentially save £68 billion and prevent 3.4 million cases over 25 years in England alone, as well as improve patients’ health and quality of life.
